Charlottetown, PE — The Atlantic Police Academy and the Burke Police Dog Academy, located in Coverdale, New Brunswick, celebrated the graduation of their first K-9 dog handler recently from the only accredited program of its kind in the country. Constable Mike Horgan of the Saint John Police Department completed the 14-weeks of rigorous training with Nitro, a German Shepherd. Donald Burke, president of Burke Police Dog Academy, said the agreement with Holland College’s Atlantic Police Academy has the potential to benefit many municipal police services across the country. “The association between Holland College and the Burke Police Academy has brought to the Maritimes a great opportunity for all municipal K-9 units across Canada to excel in the most sophisticated methods of police dog training to national standards,” he said. Chief Edgar MacLeod, Executive Director of the Atlantic Police Academy said the academy is pleased to be able to offer the training, and has absolute confidence in the training staff at the Burke Police Dog Academy. “Clients such as the Saint John Police Department come to us with high expectations about the quality of training that we provide their staff. The K-9 training program fits in well with our other programs, and we anticipate seeing many more police officers graduating from it in the future,” he said. APA partnership with the Burke Police Work Dog Academy brings together three key elements: a state-of-the-art K‐9 training facility, K‐9 training expertise with an impeccable reputation, and a police training institution that prides itself in delivering public safety training based on the highest standards. The Atlantic Police Academy has partnered with the Burke Police Dog Academy to offer a first of its kind accredited police K-9 handlers course. Congratulations to Constable Mike Horgan and K9 Nitro of the Saint John Police Force, the first graduates of this program.

"This letter of reference is in regards to Mr. Donald Burke and the Burke Police Work Dog Academy.

I have known Mr. Burke since 1997 and we have had an ongoing professional and
personal relationship since that time. I have had the pleasure of attending his kenneling
and training facilities and they are state of the art and in my opinion have never run
across a better operation.
Over the years Mr. Burke has attended a number of my training programs to further his knowledge of the police K9 community and has been a driving force in developing law enforcement canine programs in Canada. He has a desire to produce top quality working dogs, particularly German Shepherd dogs for the purposes of supporting law enforcement and I truly believe he has met his objective in this regard.
When I need a dog for a law enforcement client, I look to Mr. Burke to provide that dog. Mr. Burke provides a dog that is well temperamented and matched to the handler. His integrity and the quality of dog he provides is of the highest caliber. I strongly recommend Mr. Burke to anyone in need of high quality law enforcement capable German Shepherds."

Respectfully,

"You were able to supply us with a K-9 that answered all our needs.  We purchased the dog in March 2006 and today, the dog is now one of our finest police dogs.  Therefor we are pleased to confirm that we received an excellent service and much more."

Sergeant Pierre Jacques - Direction Des Mesures D'Urgence - Québec

"You've been able to meet all my team's training requirements. It goes without saying that total satisfaction is my top priority or my job would not exist. Professional service along with the guarantees that you
offer are very important to me.  When we need to purchase working dogs, either for international airport or other police organizations, a great amount of money is at stake and wasting our time with dogs that do not fill our needs forces us to spend a lot more unnecessary money.  In today's world effective management of funds is a key element.  I have been purchasing dogs from your firm for several years now.

You have become our exclusive dog supplier since we are confident that we will be getting excellent dogs and service from you."

** Congratulations to Yanick Choquette, a valued client of the Academy, for his recent promotion to Training Coordinator for A.D.M. **

"Since 1995, I have been coordinator of the canine unit for the city of Montreal police force and among my main tasks is the responsibility of selecting, purchasing and training pups and dogs for my section.  For several years now, the Burke Police Dog Academy has been our privileged supplier for our police force as well as providing dogs necessary to our unit.  The Academy distinguishes itself particularly for its professional service in researching dogs desired, its procedures of purchase, delivery and after-sales service.

Furthermore, the Burke Academy always provides us dogs of exceptional quality in regards to health, and a temperament with an undeniable potential for the work of police dog with no limitations to age, sex of dog (puppy, female or male).  Having worked since 1997 with dogs who detect explosives, and now currently working with my 3rd dog which is a female German Shepherd with rare effective skills that originated from the Academy."

Marc Charbonneau, Lieutenant, Coordinator Canine Unit, Service of Police of the City of Montreal

"Just another quick update. Voss is doing extremely well, he has completed tracking in levels 1 and 2, and partial 3. We have been working on obedience, agility, evidence and bite work as well. We apply the Hold and Bark (detain) within our deployment policy. I find that it is more difficult to train than the Find and Bite, but have not experienced any difficulty with Voss. Steve and I both noticed Voss to be a quick learner, as he has been detaining with little effort made on our part. Training in general has been progressing favourably. Voss would be at least 6 weeks ahead of where we would expect him to be due to your effort."

"Dex and I finished training yesterday. We have received 3 of our 4 certifications, 2 drug and 1 patrol. We will attempt our 4th cert (WSPCA Patrol) on this coming Wednesday. Thank you very much for all of your help!"

Mr. McKenna,

Let me begin by thanking you for accepting a grade 12 student from our school in your workplace through the Co-op program.  By being with you every day, Jean-David will be to see all aspects of this type of work.  This experience will certainly help him validate and confirm his choice of career and post-secondary education.

I was thoroughly impressed with your facility when I went to visit at the end of October.  You are truly professionals in your field of work.  I would not hesistate to place a student at your Police Dog Academy if ever there was another application.
Jean-David has only praise for you and your teammates.  He is excited about this placement and is very proud to tell me and other students about his work and what he accomplishes with the dogs.

Thank you for the time and attention  given to our student.  It is deeply appreciated.  I look forward to our next visit in January.

Kind regards,
